A Journey Through Field Hockey with Simon Mason: From Player to Commentator.

Welcome to another edition of Hockey Kenya where we delve into the fascinating world of field hockey, engaging in conversations with various players and personalities in the sport. Today we are thrilled to bring you an insightful interview with Simon Mason, a former player and now a well-regarded commentator in the field hockey community. Hailing from the UK, Simon takes us through his incredible journey in hockey – from his early days as an accidental player to his current role in sports administration and commentary.

Early Beginnings and Unexpected Turns

Simon Mason’s entry into the world of hockey was far from conventional. As a child, he wasn’t even aware of the sport until his parents moved within the UK. This move led him to attend a school outside his natural area, whose headmaster happened to be the under-16 England hockey manager. Through a series of serendipitous events, including his performance duringextracurricular hockey sessions, Simon was introduced to the game. Initially an outfield player, he transitioned to a goalkeeper role, a move that marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

Rise in International Hockey

Starting his international career in 1992, Simon quickly climbed the ranks, playing in various England junior teams before breaking into the senior team. Over the next twelve years, he represented England and Great Britain in three Olympic Games (1996, 2000, 2004), three European Championships (winning three bronze medals), two Commonwealth Games (one bronze medal), and three World Cups. Despite missing out on the top-tier medals at the World Cups or Olympic Games, Simon cherishes a distinguished 12-year career, forming lifelong bonds with teammates and opponents alike.

Transitioning to Sports Administration and Commentary

After his international playing career ended in 2004, Simon continued his involvement in hockey by stepping into sports administration. He joined the Athletes Committee for the London Olympic Games in 2005 and later served as the president of England Hockey (2010-2013). His role provided valuable insights into sports administration and laid the foundation for his future commentary career.

Simon’s commentary career began in 2010 during the World Cup Commonwealth Games in India, where he joined the commentary box almost by accident. His natural flair for communication and in-depth understanding of the game made him an instant hit. Over the years, he has commentated for the BBC, the International Hockey Federation (FIH), and various other platforms, covering major events like the World Cups, European Cups, and the Olympics. Simon’s dedication to research and passion for the sport have made him one of the most credible voices in hockey.
