This is great news that the African Hockey Federation is working to develop World Beach Hockey on the continent through the newly established African World Beach Hockey Committee. Beach hockey has the potential to grow the sport of hockey in many African nations.
Each member of the committee brings valuable experience that will aid in this goal. As an international version of the game adapted for play on beaches and non-grass surfaces, beach hockey is more accessible in areas without extensive field infrastructure. This could make the sport more attractive and help introduce more Africans to hockey over time.
Chair Gary Dolley’s leadership from RSA will be crucial as beach hockey is established. Other committee members also represent key hockey playing nations like Kenya, Ghana, and Zimbabwe who may be early adopters. With their combined expertise and networks across the region, the committee is well-placed to devise strategies around youth engagement, coaching programs, tournament organization and more.
From Kenya, Mombasa County Hockey Association President, Mr. Oliver Mascarenhas who joins as a member. The others include Ms. Rita Odei Asare (GHA), and Ms. Sarah Bennett (ZIM).
World Beach Hockey’s collaboration with the African committee demonstrates their commitment to cultivating the beach game on the continent. In the coming years, we can hopefully see beach hockey development initiatives launch in pilot countries. Local community clubs and school programs may introduce the sport’s variants to new audiences. As interest and participation grow, international beach hockey competitions involving African teams can further promote the sport.
The formation of this oversight group opens promising doors for hockey’s future in Africa. With proactive support from established partners like World Beach Hockey and the global hockey community, the continent’s budding players, coaches and fans now have new pathways to experience and enjoy the exciting sport. Focused efforts through this committee should see beach hockey take root and allow many more Africans to discover the joy of hockey.
