In a remarkable move to enhance inclusivity and diversity within the African Hockey Federation (AfHF), five talented individuals from Kenya have been selected to sit on three influential committees. Their appointments are effective from April 2024 until the next AfHF congress in 2025, marking a significant milestone for Kenyan hockey and the continent as a whole.
AfHF Competition Committee:
Leading the AfHF Competition Committee is Ashfar Said, an esteemed figure known for his exceptional leadership skills. Joining him are Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) President, Nahashon Randiek, and Dorothy Muga, both highly respected within the Kenyan hockey community. The committee is further strengthened by the inclusion of Geoffrey Biya from Malawi, Samuel Fadele from Nigeria, Sheila Brown from South Africa, and Illse Davids, the Athlete Representative. Together, this diverse group is poised to shape the future of African hockey competitions, ensuring fair play, innovation, and excellence.
AfHF Development Committee:
Under the capable guidance of Sarah Bennett from Zimbabwe, the AfHF Development Committee is set to propel the growth and expansion of hockey across the continent. Joining her are Wycliffe Ongori, the Secretary General of KHU, and Manjit Jhite, both seasoned professionals from Kenya. The committee’s lineup also includes Mr. Phillip Wafula, Chair of the Uganda Hockey Federation, Gary Dolley and Robyn Morgan from South Africa, and Isaac Graham from Ghana. Adding further expertise to the committee is Ahmed Ezz from Egypt, who serves as the Athlete Representative. Together, this committee will focus on nurturing talent, supporting grassroots initiatives, and fostering a sustainable hockey ecosystem in Africa.
Umpires Committee:
Leading the Umpires Committee is the accomplished Shiraz Yakub from Kenya, renowned for his deep understanding of the game. Joining him is Tina Agunda, an experienced umpire from Kenya, along with Aziz Salami Adimah from Ghana, Ebitimi Sampou from Nigeria, and Valentine Ziba from Zambia. This diverse panel will work towards enhancing the skills, professionalism, and standardization of umpires across the continent. Ebenezer Frimpong from Ghana, an athlete representative, will ensure that the committee’s decisions prioritize the welfare and interests of the players.
Officials Committee:
While Kenyan representation is absent from the Officials Committee, this body is not short on expertise. Ediga Agbo from Nigeria has been appointed as the chair, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge. Joining her is Ifiemi Tulagha, an accomplished athlete representative from Nigeria. The committee features Ahmed Essmatt Youssef from Egypt, Frank Oti-Mensah, and Richard Akpokavie from Ghana, as well as Lorna Graaff from South Africa and Sarah Bennett from Zimbabwe. Together, they will focus on ensuring effective administration, governance, and strategic guidance for the AfHF.
The inclusion of these exceptional individuals from Kenya across various committees demonstrates the AfHF’s commitment to fostering collaboration, diversity, and expertise within the sport.
