Excitement is ramping up as England’s women prepare for their first match in the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup this coming weekend.
Having waited four years since the amazing last event in London, the 2022 competition is finally upon us.
The event takes place in the Netherlands and Spain from 1-17 July, and England gets underway against India this Sunday 3 July at 3:30 pm UK time in Amsterdam.
With all three of their Pool matches taking place on Dutch soil, the players and staff traveled to the Netherlands on Monday evening, and we’ve got an insight into what lies ahead for our squad.
When are England’s games?
Pool games
Sun 3 Jul – England v India, Amstelveen
Tue 5 Jul – England v New Zealand, Amstelveen
Thu 7 Jul – England v China, Amstelveen
Pool B has all the makings of a highly competitive set of matches. All four teams – China, England, India, and New Zealand – have undergone major rebuilding in the past few months and all four are teams that will have serious podium aspirations.
Knockout matches
If England wins their Pool, they remain in Holland for a quarter-final on Tue 12. If they win that QF, they go to Terrassa, Spain for both a semi-final on Sat 16 and finals day on Sun 17.
If England finishes second or third in the Pool, they go to Spain for a crossover on Sun 10 July. If they win that game, they play a quarter-final in Spain on Wed 13 July, then potentially the semi and final on Sat 16 and Sun 17.
If England finishes fourth in their pool, they go to Terrassa to play classification matches on Mon 11 and Wed 13.
