Inaugural Uganda Memorial Hockey Shield to curtain-raise 2022 local competitions

Uganda Hockey local competitions for the year 2022 are set to hit-off next month and as it has been the tradition, the national hockey league (for both men and women) will lead the way for other domestic engagements throughout the year.

However, this year things are a bit different because Uganda Hockey Association (UHA) has introduced a Memorial Shield which will be played on 13th March in memory of the fallen heroes of the game. This event will serve as a curtain-raiser for all local competitions.

According to the Uganda Hockey communiqué released recently, the 2022 UHA Memorial Shield shall be played between the 2021 National League and Uganda Cup champions, for both men and women. Where the team is a double champion, the slot shall fall to the National League runners-up.

This means that in the men’s category, league winners Weatherhead HC will come up against Wanachi SC whilst Wanachi SC women’s side who won both the league and Uganda Cup will face league runners up Deliverance Church Ug HC.

Teams shall be allowed to use a maximum of 22 players for the match. Teams shall submit the names of all 22 players by 10th March 2022 to the Organising Secretary.

Penalties accrued in the course of the game shall not be carried over into the season.

After the Memorial Shield, the league will start in a week’s time (19th March). It’s scheduled to run up to 19th November.

However, Uganda Hockey also revealed that the player transfer window shall close on 17th March 2022 at 1 pm. Teams are urged to complete all transfer transactions within this period to avoid last-minute panic.
